I decided to see what all the hype was about. A remake of a 1990 movie by the same name, based on a novel by Stephen King, IT is a movie about a group of pre-teen children who live in a town suddenly plagued by sudden disappearances of other children and random horrific visions. By far the most enjoyable part of the movie is the performance of the 'losers club', the unofficial name of the group of protagonists. They actually seem like a relatable and real group of friends. The interactions between them were all enjoyable, even funny. Considering child actors often have a reputation for letting down the writing, I was impressed. However, the film's primary objective is to scare the audience, and it seems I'm not alone in thinking the film itself isn't really scary. It's far too predictable and the same old horror scares just don't work anymore. Psychological horrors seem to be ruling the market right now and a film like this which just plays on the most common phobias feels quite cheap. IT was much more funny than scary and so I can see why many audience members can feel like they were ripped off and the film was perhaps falsely advertised.
