The reason I left the genre blank for this piece is because the assignment I was given was 'write what you think Fight Club is about'. And a big part of that is selecting a genre which I believe is nearly impossible. In my opinion, it's a thriller before anything else, hosting a lot of the classic thriller tropes and containing perhaps one of the biggest movie twists in cinema history. But there's still elements of a psychological horror as well. It shows the internal struggle of a man with psychological issues slowly losing his grip on reality until he finds himself waging a war between himself and his own cult. It's quite a scary plot. Yet, the character of Marla Singer adds an entirely new genre aspect by also introducing romance, however sick and twisted it may be. A male character surpassing his own issues and boundaries to find himself hand in hand with the girl he realizes he loves who becomes the only certainty in his confusing state of mind. We can't shun the action either. There's explosions, elaborate terrorism portrayed as morally correct, brutal fight scenes and sex. All of these descriptions are accurate; and if you were told them with no knowledge of the movie, would probably be convinced it belonged to the corresponding genre's, but it's simply not. It's the weird Frankenstein monster of cinema that ripped the very limbs of film genre's apart and stuck them all together into one beautiful narrative that rips the wallpapers off of society to show the grotesque, materialistic mindset we're developing as a human race. And I love it.
